Dice Decides Challenge

Let the Dice Decide: A 6 week quilting WIP challenge

Do you have a "closet of shame" filled with half-finished quilt tops, stacks of un-sewn blocks, or "quilt-in-a-bag" projects that haven't seen the light of day in a year or more?

It’s easy to get distracted by the "shiny new project" syndrome, leaving our beautiful works in progress (WIPs) to gather dust. If you’re tired of decision paralysis and WIP guilt every time you walk into your sewing room, it’s time to let fate take the wheel.

How the Challenge Works:

We are stripping away the "what should I work on today?" stress and replacing it with 100% sewing momentum. This should be a fun yet relaxed challenge. We are looking for progress, not perfection!

Here is the breakdown:

The Starting Six: Pick 6 quilting projects that are currently "in progress." They can be at any stage—cutting fabric, piecing blocks, quilting, or even that dreaded final binding. Assign each one a number from 1 to 6.

I’m picking projects that are mostly completed as I really want to make a dent in my WIP pile in a short amount of time!

The Weekly Roll: Every Sunday, starting on 1/18/26 for the next 6 weeks, we will roll a single six-sided die. You can either roll your own at home, or use the number that I roll. The number that comes up is your soulmate for the week. You can decide ahead of time if it will be the only quilt you work on or if it only needs to be worked on for a set amount of time daily. The choice is yours. Just be sure to stick to it!

I am going to allow myself to work on other quilting projects BUT my WIP project has to be worked on first!!

Custom Commitment: You know your schedule best. Decide on a daily time goal—maybe it’s "one bobbin's worth of sewing," 30 minutes before dinner, or two hours of longarming. This is totally customizable to you and what is REASONABLE for you!

I’m planning on working on my project for a minimum of 20 minutes a day. It can be more, but it depends on what I have going on in my schedule. I also will allow myself to miss a day BUT it MUST be made up on another day! I’ll post my daily progress in my Instagram stories so you all can follow along! Like I mentioned earlier, this should be a fun, relaxed challenge. Perfection isn’t what this challenge is about

The 6-Week Finish Line: At the end of 6 weeks, the goal is to have 6 finished quilts or to be 6 BIG steps closer to a completed masterpiece.

Why This Works for Quilters

Quilting is a thought and labor-intensive hobby. It’s easy to get bogged down in a tedious border or a complex block and want to quit. By switching focus every week, you prevent burnout and keep your creative "spark" alive. Plus, there is something incredibly satisfying about checking off a project that has been sitting for months (or years in my case)!

Start Organizing Your Projects

To get started, take inventory of your WIPs and pick your “starting 6” by this Sunday, 1/18/26. Fill out your project roster (or just make a list). Here's mine:

Join the Fun!

I’ll be putting my own "Starting Six" and my weekly rolls in a newsletter for those of you who want to follow along. I’ll also post my daily progress to my Instagram stories and will post weekly about the challenge. But, as you all know, the Instagram algorithm can be brutal so you probably won’t see my posts. I encourage you all to sign up for the newsletter so you don’t miss a thing!

I want to see your progress, too! Whether you're hand-quilting a vintage heirloom or power-piecing a modern throw, every stitch counts. Be sure to tag me in any of your posts on Instagram @seaminglykate
