The Usable Scrap Method: Finally Know What to Do With Your Fabric Scraps

— a simple, intentional approach that turns leftover fabric into beautiful design-ready pieces instead of overwhelming piles.

Stop saving scraps.

Start using them.

If your scrap bins are growing faster than your quilts…

If you hesitate before cutting into fabric because you “might need it later”…

If you crave a sewing space that feels calm, usable, and inspiring…

You are exactly where so many quilters find themselves.

And you don’t need more storage bins.

You need a method.

Meet the Usable Scrap Method

This is the system I use in my own studio to make sure every cut of fabric has a future.

Inside, you’ll learn how to:

✔ Cut fabric with intention so scraps stay usable

✔ Prevent decision fatigue before it starts

✔ Build a personal fabric resource instead of a fabric graveyard

✔ Support your creativity rather than stall it

✔ Finally feel ahead of your scraps — not buried by them

This isn’t about perfection.

It’s about gentle structure that gives your creativity room to breathe.

I didn’t create this method because I’m ultra-organized.

I created it because — like many quilters — I realized my growing fabric collection deserved better than chaos.

Once I shifted how I cut and stored my fabric, everything changed:

  • Quilt planning became easier.

  • Scrappy quilts became more beautiful.

  • My studio felt lighter.

  • And most importantly…

I started using what I already owned.

Now I teach this approach so other quilters can experience that same ease.

This method is for the quilter who:

  • has accumulated fabric they love

  • wants to use their stash more intentionally

  • appreciates beauty and efficiency

  • feels ready for a smarter approach

  • enjoys learning systems that support creativity

You don’t need a massive stash.

You just need a desire to use your fabric well.

This method may NOT be for you if:

  • you prefer fully improvisational cutting with no structure

  • you primarily quilt from exact reproduction patterns

  • you love saving fabric “just in case” (think more collector than sewer)

Every quilter’s brain works differently.

But if you’re craving clarity and less overwhelm…

You may feel very at home here.

Start Using Your Scraps With Confidence

When you join my newsletter, I’ll walk you through the foundations of The Usable Scrap Method in a short, approachable email series (a total of 3 emails) that starts the very next day.

You’ll also receive my Portland Quilt Pattern as a welcome gift — a beautiful design created to support intentional fabric use.

Begin your shift from overwhelmed → intentional.

Your fabric is not the problem.

You likely just haven’t been shown a method that respects both your creativity and your time.

Once you start thinking in usable scraps…You’ll never look at fabric the same way again.

The Team

Kate

Designer & Founder

I’m Kate—the creative mind (and occasionally messy sewist) behind Seamingly Kate. I didn’t create the Usable Scrap Method because I’m a born organizer; I created it because I was tired of my fabric stash feeling like a burden instead of a resource. My mission is to give you the systems & patterns you need to clear the "scrap guilt" so you can spend more time actually quilting.

Mindy is the true backbone of the studio. As the self-appointed Chief Scrap Manager, her duties include rigorous "softness testing" (napping) on freshly cut fabric and ensuring that no stray thread goes un-chased. She’s results-driven, highly approachable, and can be easily bribed with high-quality treats or a stray bit of batting.
